Nearly every manufacturer or retailer wants to take advantage of China's mind-boggling collection of 300,000 low-cost manufacturers. But how can smaller U.S. importers choose the right suppliers, negotiate the right terms for a contract, manage global trade compliance for their shipments, and monitor the effectiveness of the supply chain that delivers their imports to the U.S.? Even with the help of third-party logistics providers, large multinationals with personnel and technology often make missteps.
So what's a small importer to do? Enter B2X Corp., a Jersey City, N.J., company that just launched a turnkey service for small importers whether they are wholesalers, retailers or online merchants. B2X handles the entire process, including manufacturing and quality control, safety inspection and regulatory fees. B2X's fee covers those costs in one package that usually includes transportation and logistics fees. B2X becomes the importer of record - the legal owner of the import shipment until it reaches the U.S. manufacturer or retailer who ordered it.
To use this new service, U.S. importers can either choose a generic product from B2X's online catalog or request B2X to arrange for a Chinese contract manufacturer to meet specific specifications not in the catalog, such as an ice cream freezer with an unusual configuration or clothing with a brand label. The importer uses an online customization tool, submitting his specs in PDF format along with special notes where necessary. 'Our secret sauce is our electronic platform, which facilitates customization requests,' said Joe Sorisi, chief executive of B2X.
B2X then forwards the requirements to contract manufacturers in China who can meet those needs. B2X negotiates a price quote with one or more Chinese manufacturers, and provides a sample product and negotiable quote for the importer. 'If you want customized products, all you need is the technical specs of your toy or garment,' Sorisi said. 'You concentrate on the design and the marketing; we do everything else. Without us, small companies don't have the buying scale or know-how they need. We help them put their 15 percent margin back on the shelf.'
How can B2X do all that? Thanks to a five-year exclusive contract with the Chinese government, B2X maintains relationships with about 700 Chinese manufacturers in such sectors as apparel, appliances, consumer electronics, home and garden, and toys. It also has a database of thousands of Chinese factories that B2X can contact. For example, B2X already handles the contract manufacturing for eight Chinese-made toy products such as Pterodactyl, a soft plush dinosaur.
B2X's quote usually includes transportation, and the company tracks the product from one end of the supply chain to the other, in partnership with such 3PLs as DHL Logistics and Kuehne & Nagel. Those U.S. importers who prefer to maintain their traditional relationships with transportation and logistics providers can arrange for B2X to deliver their Chinese-made product f.o.b. to a port in China. From that point on, the U.S. importer becomes responsible for transportation costs. In some cases, an importer may save money with such an arrangement, Sorisi said.
Sorisi said his new service has received a warm welcome from small importers who want to avoid many of the headaches of the import process. Without this kind of service, he said, small companies either can find an agent, who charges 6 to 7 percent of the value of the shipment for its services, or they can do it all themselves. The problem with that, he said, is, 'There are about 14 steps in the process, and you have to know every step.'
Victor de Silva, vice president of imports at Kandy Kiss, an apparel importer that sells to Target, Sears and other retailers, has been using B2X to facilitate its financing of trade deals in Asia for about a year. Before B2X launched its new turnkey service, Kandy Kiss researched and developed its own relationships with contractors worldwide.
He said B2X 'turned out to be a pretty good experience because they made it easier for us to do business.' He said California-based Kandy Kiss may sign up for B2X's new service because it could help Kandy Kiss establish strong relationships with Chinese contract manufacturers who are not as developed and sophisticated, and who operate below the radar screen.
B2X Trading Platform Streamlines China Supply Chains for Smaller Companies ByDan Berthiaume
2008-02-22 Users can cut some of the red tape and trouble by browsing product costs, specs, keywords and quotes. NEW YORK - Global importer B2X is targeting small-to-mid-sized retail enterprises with a new online trading platform designed to streamline the process of sourcing products from China. The platform was announced Feb. 17 at the 2008 Toy Fair in New York. “Sourcing from China is a paper-intensive, heavily regulated process,” said Joe Sorisi, CEO of B2X. “A lot of individuals and companies need to get involved, and small-to-mid-sized players sacrifice margin to get product through a robust supply chain.” Sorisi said that using a platform including technologies from SAP and Oracle, as well as a front-end IBM WebSphere Commerce portal, B2X can enable buyers to see thousands of Chinese products in an online database and then create fully landed cost quotes. “This makes it easier for small-to-mid-sized retailers to take advantage of soft sourcing opportunities in China,” said Sorisi. “The trading platform gives information and allows buyers to browse product costs and keywords, access product specifications, get quotes for multiple product lines and save those quotes for 30 days.” Sorisi said that the platform also features a patented design lab service that allows buyers to make their own product modifications, submit them to the B2X procurement group and obtain quotes. In addition, he said a patented international importing trading matrix informs buyers of what size container their order will ship in, depending on order size. B2X serves as wholesaler of record for transactions conducted on its platform, according to Sorisi, and negotiates with buyers for the Chinese manufacturers it represents. The company has access to approximately 10,000 base products from thousands of Chinese factories, he said. “We want to put tools back on the table for mom-and-pops to compete,” said Sorisi. Bryan Jensen, vice president of business development for supply chain engineering and consulting firm St. Onge Company, analyzed the benefits that U.S. toy retailers could obtain from the B2X platform as an example of its functionality. “Sourcing from China poses the classic risk of time-to-market to toy retailers,” said Jensen. “It causes a generally greater amount of inventory. You can’t not source from China and be competitive [as a toy retailer].” Jensen said that toy retailers also face a huge demand peak in the fourth quarter, while manufacturers keep their production flat. “You must buy early and forward and guess right,” he said. “You don’t want to overcommit too early and [also] don’t want to be shut out of hot toys and disappoint your customers.” While large toy retailers have built proprietary systems to source from China, where the U.S. toy industry obtains more than 99 percent of its product, Jensen said that smaller retailers, in particular online niche players who sell collectible items, could benefit from the type of service B2X offers. “It provides connectivity to a necessary overseas source,” he said. Key technologies used in the B2X technology platform include an IBM Websphere-based online transaction portal, a custom IBM-powered order management system, an SAP financial system, EC Vision and ERP system support for supply chain management, a custom-designed product management and classification system, an Oracle 10g, 2 node RAC database application, and a Tridion Web content management solution, all running on a Linux OS.

The B2X all-inclusive, delivered price consists of manufacturing costs, quality assurance inspection, import and export regulatory fees, tariffs, insurance, and freight forwarding. “For some time, the major retailers have monopolized the direct availability of foreign manufactured products. B2X is helping growing retailers put products on the shelf, dependably and at a competitive, reliable price,” said Joseph A. Sorisi, Chief Executive Officer of B2X Corporation. “Our unique process allows retailers to focus on what they do best, selling and marketing their products, while B2X does the rest.” Until now, small-to-midsize retailers had two choices available for importing products into the United States in compliance with relevant import/export laws and regulations. By greatly simplifying the risks of sourcing, manufacturing and logistical tasks, B2X offers a new alternative that delivers higher margins to retailers. American Companies Eager Yet Cautious About Sourcing Products From China (businesswire.com)
Jersey City, NJ – May 14th, 2007 – B2X Corp.’s 1Q 2007 survey of American companies in a variety of businesses and industries shows many to be eager to source products from China -- provided they can find a reliable means of facilitating those transactions. The study, conducted between January 15 and March 15, 2007 among more than 1,000 wholesalers and retailers in the furniture, textile, clothing, electronics and toy industries, found that much of executives’ hesitation to source from China stems from concerns over the ability to manage the process. For example, 25.7% of companies surveyed who have never been supplied directly by a Chinese manufacturer, or have done it in the past but have now ceased, expressed concern that they might not have the resources or expertise to find reliable manufacturers there. In addition, 19.8% said they did not have the internal resources, the time or the experience to manage the import process, while 12.7% said the risk of not receiving quality goods within the necessary delivery time was too prohibitive. And 19.6% held to a belief that any savings gained on the actual delivered costs of the products would be out-weighed by the additional in-house costs required to source products directly. Even given those concerns, however, nearly one-third said they were still “interested” or “very interested” in exploring ways of sourcing products directly from manufacturers in China without the risk and cost of being an importer. That same one-third admitted to being “interested” or “very interested” in finding Chinese sources for their products quickly and efficiently in a secure, on-line environment from their offices – and that they would like to receive immediate delivered prices for products they might potentially purchase (including all costs right up to delivery to their distribution centers). In addition, nearly 41% were “interested” or “very interested” in purchasing goods from China if the delivery and quality of the goods were guaranteed. Among the survey’s other findings:
- More than 30% expressed average or greater-than-average interest in learning about how to join a buying group of companies similar to theirs in other geographic areas of the United States in order to benefit from the combined purchasing clout (provided that their own identities and purchases were protected). - Just under 28% said they would like to learn how to customize products manufactured in China by including their company's name and brand on both the products and packaging. - More than a third (35.3%) admitted to being interested in purchasing goods from China if they could pay for them as if it were a domestic U.S. sale, with traditional U.S. business terms of payment. - Virtually the same number (35.4%) are “interested” or “very interested” in having a trusted U.S. company provide all the procurement and logistics management required to deliver purchases from China to their doors with no additional charges or fees.
